A Magistrate Court has sentenced a Maldivian man to one month and 24 days in prison for assaulting his sibling on an island in the south of the Maldives.
According to the case report, the incident took place at approximately 11:00am on July 2 this year, when the defendant physically assaulted and injured his sibling.
He was subsequently charged with causing injury under the Penal Code of the Maldives. During the preliminary hearing, he voluntarily pleaded guilty to the charge.
Although the standard penalty for the offence of causing injury is four months and 24 days in prison, the court reduced the sentence in accordance with the provisions of the Penal Code, taking into account the defendant’s early admission of guilt during the preliminary stage of proceedings.
The Magistrate Court delivered its verdict on September 24th, sentencing the defendant to one month and 24 days of imprisonment.
