Youth arrested in fatal Sosun Magu accident jailed pending trial’s end

The young man arrested in an accident in Male’ that resulted in the death of a young woman has been remanded in jail pending the outcome of his trial.

The tragic accident took place at around 01:22 am on September 21 on Sosun Magu of Male’ City, when a motorcycle driven by an unlicensed individual crashed into a second motorcycle with a man and a woman.

The accident left all three people injured, including 26-year-old Aishath Maahidha, a native of Sh. Foakaidhoo who was working as an assistant officer at Maldives Immigration Service. Maahidha sustained traumatic brain injuries in the accident and passed away at ADK Hospital on September 25.

21-year-old Maah Hassan, the unlicensed driver involved in the accident, was arrested on September 22. The Criminal Court initially remanded him in police custody for 15 days, but was ordered to jail pending the outcome of his trial when presented before the court for a review of his remand on Thursday.

The evidence submitted against the Th. Dhiyamigili native includes snapshots and photo report of CCTV footage, the incident report and his traffic violation record.

Police told the court that the accident resulted from him speeding and driving recklessly, including in a zigzag pattern.

He was stopped and fined four times this year alone for driving without a license.

He had asked for leniency in his remand citing that he himself got injured in the accident, but was denied the request.
