Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office Chief Executive Officer Yoosuf Maaniu and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed have met to discuss finding sustainable solutions to traffic problems in the Male' area and working together to ensure road safety and security.
The meeting was held on Monday at the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, Police Headquarters. Discussions focused on measures needed to address the traffic issues faced across the Greater Male' region. The meeting also explored ways to further strengthen cooperation between the Maldives Police Service and the Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office to ensure safety and security for all road users.
The Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office is a recently established office under the President’s authority to manage traffic matters in the Male' area and resolve ongoing challenges. Dangerous accidents have been increasing in the city, and the death toll has also risen. According to the latest police statistics, most of these incidents occur in Hulhumale'.
Police statistics show that 1,295 accidents occurred in Hulhumale' in the first seven months of this year, 64 percent of the 2,018 accidents reported nationwide during the period. More than 200 accidents have been reported each month this year. The highest number of accidents occurred in Hulhumale' Phase I, with 887 cases, while 408 were recorded in Phase II.
Most of these accidents occur at newly built roundabouts in Hulhumale'. Many road users are still unaware of the purpose of roundabouts or how to navigate them correctly. This indicates that Maaniu’s work will require long‑term, large‑scale awareness efforts, as congestion and accidents cannot be solved by placing a police officer at every curbside, but through education, training and sustained public engagement.
