Man arrested after 72-year-old worshipper sexually assaulted at Angolhitheemu home

A suspect was arrested on Monday after an elderly woman was threatened and sexually assaulted as she prayed at her home in R. Angolhitheemu.

The case was reported to the police at around 08:30 pm Monday.

According to the police, the suspect is believed to have threatened to kill the victim, a 72-year-old Maldivian woman, before sexually assaulting her.

The police confirm the victim sustained injuries in the attack, and was treated at the local health center but was later discharged.

The police arrested the suspect in the case, identified as a 44-year-old Maldivian male, at around 09:57 pm.

The woman was reportedly assaulted as she performed the Isha prayer in her bedroom.

The police said they were treating the case as a serious crime.
