Dedicated dress code to be introduced for Imams

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced plans to introduce a dedicated dress code for imams.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Minister Shaheem said the Ministry has decided to develop a professional dress code for imams, including those who lead Friday and Eid prayers, as well as regular imams while carrying out their duties. He added that the attire would incorporate a Taqiyah (Thaakiha).

The announcement comes as the Young Khathibs' Symposium, which was held yesterday with more than 300 participants, to mark the 900th anniversary of the Maldives' conversion to Islam.

Speaking at the conference, Minister Shaheem expressed confidence that the current generation of young imams would be more academically accomplished than previous generations. He encouraged young khathibs to pursue higher education in fields of their choice with dedication, while also urging them to remain committed to leading prayers throughout their lives.

As part of the government's efforts to cultivate a new generation of religious leaders, more than 700 young khathibs have received training to date.

Minister Shaheem also highlighted that the Maldives currently has the highest number of Hafizs—individuals who have memorized the Holy Quran—in the country's history, with 322 registered Hafizs. He said the government aims to increase this figure to 500 during the current term.
