Maumoon: My wish is for Maldives to always remain as a nation to faithful to Islam

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has voiced his strong hope that the Maldives will continue to uphold its longstanding commitment and devotion to Islam, remaining steadfast in its faith as it has throughout its history.

In a special message to commemorate the Day the Maldives Embraced Islam, Maumoon noted that 900 years have passed since the country accepted Islam on the 2nd of Rabi' al-Akhir in the year 548 AH. Underscoring the historical importance of the occasion, he extended his sincere greetings and congratulations to all Maldivians.

"My wish is for the Maldives to continue as a nation faithful and devoted to Islam in the future, just as it has remained for the past nine centuries," Maumoon said.

Reflecting on the legacy of previous generations, he said that despite the numerous challenges encountered by the nation over the years, the ancestors of the Maldives remained unwavering in their faith and steadfastly safeguarded the religion against threats to its stability.

Maumoon further stressed that Islamic principles form the foundation upon which the Maldives was established.

"Islam is the national cornerstone of the Maldives; this nation is built upon the tenets of Islam. Likewise, it is the foundation of Maldivian nationalism," he added.

Concluding his message, Maumoon called on all Maldivians to remain steadfast in upholding and serving the noble religion of Islam, while continuing to follow the exemplary path established by their forefathers.
