VP: A strong education system must look beyond academic metrics

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef says that a strong education system must look beyond academic metrics alone.

Speaking as chief guest at the opening of the eighth International Teachers’ Conference held at Shaheed Ali School on Saturday morning, VP Hussain called for a transformative shift in the national education landscape, emphasizing that genuine progress relies on expanding inclusive classrooms and advancing vocational pathways.

In his speech, the Vice President stated that the nation’s greatest strength lies in its people, with few professions carrying a greater responsibility than teaching.

He said that the national curriculum reflects this mandate by preparing students both for examinations and for life beyond school.

VP Hussain argued that a strong education system must look beyond academic metrics alone, stressing that technical and vocational skills are vital to driving industry, innovation, and a resilient economy.

Alongside workforce readiness, he advocated for inclusive classrooms where every student — regardless of ability, learning differences, or background — is supported to achieve their goals.

Addressing the rise of Artificial Intelligence and modern technology, the Vice President cautioned that while digital tools enhance instruction, they can never replace dedicated educators.

While technology provides tools, teachers instill values, build character, and inspire students, he said, adding that no policy, curriculum, or innovation can succeed without educator buy-in and leadership.

The opening ceremony saw Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu present VP Hussain with a commemorative plaque as a token of appreciation.

Convened by the National Institute of Education (NIE) from Saturday to Sunday, the conference is held under the theme “Reimagine, Rethink, Reform – Advancing Innovation for an Equitable and Resilient Future.” It brings together local and international educators, leaders, and researchers to share expertise and shape the future of learning.
