Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef on Wednesday called for increased assistance and climate financing from international partners to countries most affected by climate change.
He made the appeal while speaking on climate mobility principles at the high‑level segment of the opening of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum.
He said climate change affects the daily lives of the people, the country’s future, and national development projects. He added that finding sustainable solutions to mitigate climate‑related damage is a sensitive and urgent issue.
The Vice President highlighted the importance Maldives places on protecting forests and implementing climate‑resilient housing and rehabilitation projects in rural areas.
Citing Hulhumale' as an example, he said Ras Male' is also being developed on the same principles, designed to support both human and economic development.
He added that climate mobility efforts must prioritise sustainability and harm reduction.

If island communities wish to remain in their homes, they must be given the opportunity to do so safely, he said.
The Vice President said any relocation of island communities should be planned and carried out on their own initiative.
He also stressed that financial assistance is essential for climate adaptation, noting that vulnerable countries cannot shoulder these responsibilities alone.
He called on development partners to increase financial support in the form of grants, expand access to technology, and provide training to small developing countries.
He concluded by welcoming the Climate Mobility Principles, adding that Maldives will always support initiatives that protect people’s rights and advocate for relief and a brighter future for vulnerable populations.
