Court extends remand of Milandhoo man accused of attempted machete attack

The court has extended the remand of a man accused of attempting to attack another man with a large machete.

The suspect, a 22-year-old native of Milandhoo, was arrested in the middle of this month. When he was produced before the court again on Thursday, his remand was extended for 15 days.

He is being investigated on charges of assault and intimidation with a sharp weapon. According to the arrest warrant, the incident took place on the night of 15 August, when he allegedly attempted to attack a man with a sharp weapon on Milandhoo. The warrant also states that he attempted to stab a civilian in the area, and hid the machete under a motorcycle when police arrived.

Police recovered one machete and two knives from under the motorcycle seat. The suspect admitted to going to the scene, making noise, and being intoxicated at the time.

He was first remanded on 16 August, and the remand was extended when he was brought back to court on Thursday.

Intimidating a person with a sharp weapon, or threatening death or serious bodily harm, is an offence punishable by seven to ten years in prison. Penalties for fighting with a sharp weapon vary depending on the injuries caused; serious injury carries a sentence of seven to ten years.

While assault and intimidation are offences under the Penal Code, cases involving sharp weapons generally fall under the special law, due to the higher penalties prescribed.
