The National Drug Agency (NDA) has signed an agreement with a Chinese university to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into drug rehabilitation and psychological support services in Maldives.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Yunnan University, focusing on the development and use of AI-based solutions for rehabilitation and mental health assistance. The agreement was signed on behalf of the NDA by Ahmed Siddiq, State Minister at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and Chairman of the NDA Board.
Following the signing, representatives from Yunnan University briefed NDA officials on potential applications of AI in treatment and support systems.

NDA statistics show that more than 10,000 people in Maldives are currently addicted to drugs, a significant figure for a country with a population of around half a million. The agency operates nine treatment centers across major population hubs, but has repeatedly stated that capacity needs to be expanded to meet demand.
The NDA has also highlighted challenges faced by individuals after completing treatment. Many struggle to reintegrate into the community due to limited family and social support, increasing the risk of relapse. The agency believes AI-based tools could help strengthen monitoring, counselling, and continuity of care.
