Maldives-Sharjah discuss strengthening trade in fisheries sector

Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Thoriq Ibrahim holds discussions with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).

The Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Thoriq Ibrahim has held discussions with the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) aimed at enhancing economic and commercial relations between the Maldives and the Emirate of Sharjah.

According to a report by UAE news outlet "Sharjah24," the discussions were held during an official meeting at the SCCI headquarters, where Ambassador Tariq and his delegation met with SCCI Chairman Abdullah Sultan Al Owais.

The meeting was attended by Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Business Sector at the Sharjah Chamber, and Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Muqarrab, Director of the International Relations Department, alongside other senior officials representing both sides.

The discussions primarily focused on identifying investment opportunities and broadening trade sectors to generate mutual benefits for both markets. Areas highlighted included fish storage and processing, the date trade, and expanding investment in the tourism sector.

Chairman Al Owais welcomed the Maldivian delegation and reaffirmed the SCCI’s commitment to strengthening ties between the business communities of Sharjah and the Maldives. He also highlighted Sharjah’s advanced maritime and logistics infrastructure as a potential gateway for Maldivian businesses seeking to access regional and international markets.

The Maldivian delegation praised Sharjah’s economic development and expressed interest in participating in various exhibitions and commercial events organized by the Sharjah Chamber.

 

The report further noted that the meeting included extensive discussions on the Maldives government's plans to develop lagoons and ports and expand the logistics sector, with the Maldivian side expressing interest in drawing on Sharjah’s expertise in port management and operations.
