State minister Fairoosh resigns

Dr. Abdulla Fairoosh on Thursday resigned from his position as a state minister at the Home Ministry.

In a post on X announcing his resignation, Fairoosh said he made the decision after “careful consideration.”

“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to resign from my position. I believe this is the right time to bring this chapter of my public service to a close,” he wrote on X.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country, and thanked his colleagues as well as the institutions he worked with.

Fairoosh did not immediately respond to phone calls and text messages seeking details regarding his decision.

Fairoosh has initially served in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration as a state minister at the Higher Education Ministry, before getting transferred to the Home Ministry on October 16, 2024.

He previously served at the Maldives Police Service, from where he honorably retired in 2021 after 20 years of service. He was serving as the Assistant Commissioner of Police at the time.

However, the Parliament rejected his honorable retirement in the same year in light of multiple allegations against him.

The issue of Fairoosh’s retirement was submitted by then-Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed, citing his retirement could not be accepted under the newly enacted Maldives Police Service Act.

Fairoosh had taken over as Acting Police Commissioner following the fall of Nasheed’s administration on February 7, 2012. He is accused of playing a key role in the civil unrest preceding Nasheed’s resignation - which Nasheed maintains had been coerced.
