Almost a month has passed since the maritime accident that caused serious damage to a speedboat near the Izzuddin Jetty in Male', and the boat that fled the scene remains at large, according to police.
The collision occurred at 09:10pm on July 9. Police said they received a report at 09:16pm that a speedboat named Legion 1 had crashed near the Izzuddin Jetty. The second vessel involved in the accident left the area without stopping.
Police said the search for the vessel is still ongoing, with Marine Police and a dedicated investigation team continuing efforts to identify and locate it.
Five people aboard Legion 1 sustained injuries and were treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The injured included four expatriate men and one Maldivian man. The speedboat suffered extensive damage, with one side severely impacted and its seating area also heavily damaged.
Maritime accidents have been increasing in recent months. On August 2, a supply boat collided with a speedboat and fled the scene, though that vessel was later recovered and is now under investigation.
