President says new finger jetties will end speedboat hopping and ease congestion at Izzuddin Jetty area

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says new finger jetties will be constructed near the Izzuddin Jetty area to resolve long-standing congestion issues and eliminate the need for passengers to move across moored speedboats when boarding or disembarking.

Speaking on Wednesday during the latest episode of the Nation Chat podcast aired on PSM, the President said speedboats arriving from the atolls currently crowd the harbour area, forcing passengers to cross from one vessel to another, a practice that has caused difficulties for travellers for many years.

The President said the government will build a series of small “finger jetties” in the area to allow direct berthing for all passenger speedboats.

“About sixty jetties will be built, finger jetties will be built, then all the speedboats can come and dock directly at the jetty,” he said.

He said the jetties will be constructed as part of the remaining works of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project, which includes improvements to the outer ring road around Male’. The President said the aim is to complete the project by November next year.

The remaining section of the ring road will be developed from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area to the Tsunami Monument. Once completed, the President said the upgraded two-lane road will bring significant relief to traffic flow in the capital.

The latest portion of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment, segments two to five, was opened to public traffic on Friday. The MVR 144 million project includes widening the road, modern paving, upgrading water and sewerage systems, and installing a new drainage network.

While the President referred to the planned structures as “jetties”, as is common in local usage, the designs released by the government show finger piers, narrow berthing platforms extending into the harbour to allow vessels to dock directly without obstructing one another.

The President earlier shared concept images and an animated video of the redesigned harbour on X, noting that the new layout will eliminate the need for passengers to cross multiple boats to reach the quay.
