Police urge public to avoid sea travel as MET warns of heavy rain and rough seas

Police have advised the public to avoid sea travel except for essential needs due to the ongoing bad weather across the Maldives.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast heavy rain and thundershowers in parts of the country, with conditions expected to vary through the day. According to the agency, seas will be moderate to moderately calm in the afternoon, with wave heights between two and five feet. Rain is also expected in scattered areas.

The MET said police have urged travellers to exercise caution when undertaking sea journeys. Travellers are advised to stay updated on weather developments and follow official warnings. Police have further advised the public to avoid sea travel unless absolutely necessary and to wear life jackets when travelling. They also reminded vessel operators to follow safety measures and not carry more passengers or goods than permitted.

This period coincides with the first term school holidays. With schools set to reopen next week Sunday, authorities expect a busy travel period for many families.

The MET has already forecast rain throughout the week and advised the public to remain vigilant.
