The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage has begun the groundwork to establish library services across every inhabited island in the Maldives, marking a major step toward expanding access to knowledge and cultural resources nationwide.

Speaking on PSM News, State Minister Shukrullah Shakeel said the Social Council has approved the policy paper outlining the development of regional branches of the National Library. He noted that ensuring access to library services for all citizens remains a key priority of the administration.

“This is a highly significant objective for the government. Our aim is to make library services accessible on every inhabited island in the Maldives,” State Minister Shukrullah Shakeel said.

The National Library has already commenced construction of new branches in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City, forming the first phase of the nationwide expansion.

During the programme, National Library Director General Fathimath Shiham said the policy framework was finalised following consultations with more than 100 stakeholders. She added that a comprehensive survey conducted with local councils helped identify the architectural and operational models required for the new libraries.

“The library is a vital institution. It provides children access to reading materials and enables the public to seek information,” she said.

As part of the broader effort to modernise and digitise library services, the government has also launched the Online Digital Report Collection, a central repository consolidating official reports into a digital platform.
