Maldives Police Service have launched an investigation into an alleged assault involving three minors residing at the temporary juvenile residential treatment centre in HA. Hoarafushi.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Police said they are investigating an incident reported last night involving three children staying at the temporary residential treatment centre in Hoarafushi.

The Police said the three minors are suspected of leaving the facility and assaulting an individual on the island.

Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Afsam told Sun on Tuesday night that three minors from the 'Halfway House' had an argument with an individual who had been fishing on the beach.

Afsam, citing informed sources, added that the minors allegedly assaulted the individual as he attempted to escape.

"We have received reports that the victim was treated at the hospital and may be transferred off the island to receive further medical care," he said.

Videos circulating on social media show a large crowd gathered outside the Hoarafushi Halfway House last night in protest over the incident.

Posts accompanying the videos claim that the assault victim was later found abandoned inside a vacant house.
