The Male’ City Council has passed a budget of MVR 500,000 to address issues facing Maafannu Madharusa, including overheating at the school hall and leaky roofs in classrooms.

The issues were raised during a city council meeting on Wednesday by Aishath Hana, the representative for Central Maafannu constituency.

Hana explained that the multi-purpose hall at the preschool is unbearably warm, and unfit for young children.

“Given that this is a preschool, and a place where young children are taught the education and skills they need, it is imperative to make this a place that accommodates for their health and wellbeing. I therefore suggest that we install air-conditioning at the Maafannu Madharusa’s hall,” she said.

The motion was seconded by Ibrahim Labaan Shareef, the representative for South Maafannu, who stressed that it is crucial to provide children with a comfortable school environment.

“We saw how bad; how warm the place was. We have visited the place multiple times,” he said.

Labaan said that in additional to the issue of overheating, the school’s classrooms also have leaky roofs.

He suggested that in addition to installing air-conditioning at the hall, the council should also fix the leaky roofs.

Mayor Adam Azim voiced support for the initiative.

He estimated that it will take around MVR 500,000 to install air-conditioning and fix the leaky roofs, and said the council will issue an invitation to submit tenders for the project.

“We estimate it will take a budget of MVR 500,000,” he said.

The council passed the budget by unanimous vote.

Established in 1984, the school teaches students from nursery to upper kindergarten.
