The Community Engagement Unit of the Male' City Council, which works to resolve public issues in the city, handled the highest number of cases related to littering in public spaces last week, according to newly released statistics.

The unit looked into 321 cases between 26 February and 1 March. Of these, 96 cases have been fully investigated, while 225 cases have been flagged for further inquiry. The unit also issued advice in eight cases and imposed fines in five instances.

The most common issues addressed by the unit were littering on roads, alleyways, vacant land and lagoon areas. A total of 256 such cases were investigated. Other issues reviewed during the week included:

  • Roof, drain and AC outdoor units leaking onto streets - 15 cases

  • Faded road signs and signboards, malfunctioning traffic lights and street lights - 15 cases

  • Damaged road pavement, drains and road surfaces - 12 cases

The unit also identified 11 cases of illegal street trading and investigated three cases involving individuals sleeping in public parks and mosques.

The Community Engagement Unit was established on 14 May during Mohamed Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor. He stated that the unit’s officers would work to keep the city clean and orderly. Responsibilities assigned to the unit include monitoring garbage placement on streets, checking pallets and goods placed illegally on public roads, and resolving parking issues and congestion during peak hours.

The unit began operations with 78 personnel, including 18 women and 60 men.

Littering in public spaces remains a serious problem in Male'. To address the issue, the council has urged the public to report individuals who dump garbage on the streets. The council also takes measures such as recording videos of offenders and imposing fines.
