The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) states it provided temporary accommodation and other assistance to 109 people, after a fire on Sunday night damaged multiple apartments in a residential building in Male’ City.
The fire, which originated from an apartment located on the fifth floor of Funnfalhu in Galolhu district, was reported to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Male’ Fire Station at around 10:49 pm. Firefighters managed to put out the fire an hour later, at around 11:48 pm.
28 people, including children, were taken to hospitals for smoke inhalation.
In a post on X on Tuesday morning, the NDMA said the fire affected total 109 people living in 25 different apartments in the building.
According to NDMA, it provided support for housing and food for five days for the 16 people living in three apartments on the fifth floor, and for three days for 93 people living in 22 other apartments on other floors.

The NDMA said it has spent MVR 95,000 so far on providing humanitarian aid to the victims.
The authority added that it was conducting assessments to identify the extent of the damage from the fire.
Some of the residents of the building began moving back into their apartments on Monday. However, the building continues to carry a strong smell of smoke, with some of the walls black from fire damage.
The authorities have yet to provide an official comment regarding the case of the fire.
