The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is providing assistance to over 58 people, including at least four children, after a fire on Sunday night caused extensive damage to multiple apartments in a residential building in Male’ City.
The fire, which originated from an apartment located on the fifth floor of Funnfalhu in Galolhu district, was reported to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Male’ Fire Station at around 10:49 pm. Firefighters managed to put out the fire an hour later, at around 11:48 pm.
According to the NDMA, 28 people were taken to hospitals for smoke inhalation; 25 were taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while three were taken to the ADK Hospital.
The massive fire prompted the NDMA to set up an evacuation center at the Galolhu Madrasa.
In a post on X on Monday early morning, the NDMA said the fire damaged three apartments on the fifth floor, and cut off water supply to multiple other apartments in the building.
The NDMA said that more than 58 people living in the building, including at least four children, were provided assistance through the evacuation center, including temporary accommodation, food and other necessities.
The cause of the fire is unclear at this point.
