Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan says a drone first‑responder service will be launched next year to dispatch drones immediately to locations where assistance is requested or distress is reported.

Speaking at the ceremony held Sunday evening to mark the 93rd anniversary of the Maldives Police Service, Ihusaan said the police delivered remarkable service last year, and that by the end of this administration, adequate police service centres will be established across all islands.

Ihusaan said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policy is to equip the police with the latest technology. As part of this, the police call‑center and command‑center systems will be modernised. The 911 emergency response centre will be upgraded to immediately identify a caller’s location, he said.

Once the caller’s location is identified, the system will be able to provide real‑time feeds from police cameras in the area.

Ihusaan said a drone as first responders service will be introduced next year.

“With this service, a police drone will be deployed to the scene as soon as an incident is reported. Responding officers and the command center will be able to assess the situation through live video,” Ihusaan said.

He said drones will help officers understand the situation even when response teams are delayed due to road traffic or sea‑transport issues. A state‑of‑the‑art data center is also being established, and construction of the building has already begun.

Ihusaan said the coming year will see increased efforts to target drug traffickers and to keep children away from crime. He added that special operations will be conducted to track down and deport illegal foreigners and individuals who refuse to provide biometrics.

“Next year will be another golden year for policing, with more officers on the streets equipped with technology to maintain security,” Ihusaan said.

At Sunday’s ceremony, seven employees received Pride and Merit Awards. In addition, 20 individuals and institutions who assisted the Maldives Police Service in various capacities were presented with memorial plaques.
