Boat loaded with goods sinks at Male' T-Jetty after taking in water; no injuries reported

A cargo boat loaded with goods sank in the T-Jetty area of Male' City on Saturday evening.

Police said they received a report at 7:31 pm of a boat sinking near T‑Jetty. The vessel that went down was the cargo ferry “Kurimagu,” according to police.

Regarding the cause of the incident, police said the boat began taking in water shortly after departing T‑Jetty for Vaavu Atoll with cargo. It then returned to the jetty area, where it subsequently sank.

No one on board was injured, police said.

Recovery efforts are currently underway. MNDF, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the vessel’s owner are jointly working to refloat the boat.

Police said they are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause.
