A police officer has been suspended and arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a child while in a position of trust.

Police said the incident was reported to them on the 1st of this month.

According to police, the Family and Child Protection Department is conducting the criminal investigation, while the Professional Standards Command is handling the administrative inquiry into the officer.

The 49‑year‑old man was arrested on Sunday in connection with the case. Police said he has been suspended from duty without pay since his arrest.

He was ordered to be remanded in custody for 30 days.

Child sexual abuse remains a persistent issue in the Maldives, and authorities have repeatedly raised concerns that many such cases still go unreported.
