State‑run fisheries company MIFCO has increased the purchase price of skipjack tuna per kilogram on Sunday.
MIFCO publishes its daily purchase prices and volumes across all ports. According to Saturday’s figures, all MIFCO ports bought skipjack tuna at MVR 17 per kg.
However, on Sunday, the company purchased skipjack tuna at MVR 18.50 per kg.
When asked about the change, a MIFCO official told Sun it was not a one‑day adjustment. The official said fish prices fluctuate depending on the fishing season, and may change at any time.
He added that the purchase price of skipjack tuna would not fall below MVR 16.

It is worth noting that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to raise the purchase price of skipjack tuna to MVR 20 per kg.
While the skipjack price increased on Sunday, the purchase prices for yellowfin tuna remained unchanged from Saturday. Yellowfin tuna above 10 kg was bought at MVR 20 per kg, and yellowfin tuna above 15 kg at MVR 25 per kg.
