President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states that past administrations failed to adopt comprehensive environmental policies or implement sufficient measures to protect the Maldives’ natural environment.
He made the remarks during the first episode of ‘The Pulse’, a podcast by the President’s Office, aimed at addressing issues of public interest and strengthening engagement with citizens on key social issues.
The President stated that past administration often prioritized other interests over evaluating and mitigating the environmental impacts of development projects.
"I believe they prioritized other matters over sincerity. This is why I contend that previous administrations did not engage in meaningful efforts under a comprehensive policy to safeguard the Maldives' environment," the President stated.
Speaking on the policies of his administration, President Muizzu emphasized that while land reclamation remains vital for national development, such activities must be carried out in a manner that ensures environmental sustainability. Referring to the Rasmalé project, he said the government is working toward a future in which development and environmental conservation are effectively balanced.
The President further stated that the Maldives intends to assume a proactive leadership role at international forums, including the United Nations General Assembly and conferences for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to advocate for the financial support required by small island nations.
He also highlighted the government's "Five Million Tree Project," describing it as the largest reforestation initiative ever undertaken in the Maldives. According to the President, more than 1.6 million trees have already been planted, while participating institutions are collectively working toward a target of 6.4 million trees.
President Muizzu called on citizens, particularly young people, to contribute to the initiative as part of their social responsibility.
He further explained that the project places special emphasis on restoring 90 species of plants and trees identified as endangered in the Maldives. The President added that even when development projects require the removal of trees, the government remains committed to planting additional trees alongside such projects to preserve and enhance the country's green environment.
