President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says that the government will be able to provide a substantial remedy within the next two months to the shortage of medicine in the country.
In an interview on Public Service Media (PSM)’s Nation Chat program on Saturday night, President Muizzu said that the State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation (State Pharma) – which he established in September – is engaged in multiple efforts to resolve the issue.
He said that one of the works being carried out by State Pharma is to establish a mechanism where patients on medication for chronic illnesses can have uninterrupted access to the medicine they need.
“There will be a significant change. State Pharma – the company established for this very purpose – has done a lot of work already. There will be a significant improvement around June/July,” he said.
Dr. Shah Mahir, the managing director of State Pharma, told the Parliament’s State-owned Enterprises Committee earlier this month that the company would officially launch operations in July, but that they expect it will take around six more months for the new pharmaceutical procurement and distribution system to fully stabilize.
