Shaahil’s challenge to three‑year sentence dismissed for failing to file mandatory documents

Ali Shaahil, 22, Finfenmaage, F. Nilandhoo who was arrested in connection to the brutal murder of a woman at H. Sheereen Villa in Male' City on August 7, 2022.

The High Court has rejected the appeal filed by Ali Shaahil, Finifenmaage, F. Nilandhoo, the man charged in the brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed and sentenced to three years in prison, after he failed to submit any supporting documents.

Shiaau was found brutally murdered, her body decapitated and severely desecrated, inside an apartment on the ninth floor of H. Sheereen Villa/Male’ city on August 6, 2022. Some of the charges raised against Shaahil in the case have been kept confidential.

Shaahil’s lawyer lodged an appeal against the jail sentence at the High Court last week. However, the court dismissed the case on Sunday after noting that no documents were filed along with the appeal form.

Shaahil has filed two cases in the High Court relating to the convictions that resulted in a combined sentence of three years, one month and six days. Several other charges, including intentional homicide, remain pending at the Criminal Court.

The Criminal Court ordered Shaahil to remain in custody on August 7, 2022, shortly after the murder.

Police previously stated that the post‑mortem report showed Shiaau had suffered severe injuries after death, and that the findings indicated she died from wounds inflicted by Shaahil.

The Criminal Court has earlier said it expects to deliver the remaining verdicts later this month.
