In a historic and unexpected political development, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom—long known for his firm opposition to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)—met on Friday with two former presidents from the party, to discuss a coordinated effort against the current administration.
The unprecedented meeting has drawn widespread attention, particularly in light of Yameen’s history of strong criticism and repeated allegations directed at the MDP, underscoring the deep ideological divisions that have long existed between the sides.
Despite their contentious political history, former president Mohamed Nasheed and former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih joined Yameen at ‘Function Five’ in M. Laalpoolge. The discussions will be conducted in the presence of the media, after which all three leaders will respond to journalists' questions.
Yameen first revealed plans for the collaboration on Tuesday. Speaking with Sun back then, explained that the alliance had been formed in response to what they view as growing threats to press freedom under the current administration, stressing the importance of protecting independent journalism.
Speaking at a People’s National Front (PNF) town hall meeting last night, Yameen said the leaders had agreed to put aside their political differences "for the sake of the nation".
“Despite the history of arrests and our deep-seated differences, we are setting them aside for the sake of the entire nation. The challenges and grievances the public is facing under the current leadership far outweigh the past conflicts that existed between these three leaders," he said.
Commenting on the alliance, the government’s Chief Spokesperson, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu), stated that the emerging alliance among three former presidents is ultimately aimed at securing a ticket to challenge President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the 2028 presidential election. Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu himself commented on the alliance during a ruling party alliance last night, describing the trio as "failures" who once backstabbed each other that have little meaningful contribution to offer the nation.
The leaders’ united stance on press freedom comes amid heightened political tension following the recent imprisonment of two journalists from ‘Adhadhu’ news. The Criminal Court sentenced journalist Leevan Ali Nasir to 10 days in custody and Mohamed Shahzan to 15 days for allegedly violating a court order.
This marks the first time Yameen has held formal discussions with the two former MDP leaders. Given the significant political influence of all three figures, the meeting is widely being viewed as a landmark moment in Maldivian politics.
Although notable, such political alliances are not entirely unprecedented in the Maldives. Opposition figures have historically united against incumbent governments. Major opposition leaders previously joined forces against Nasheed’s administration, while a similarly broad coalition—including former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom—was later formed against Yameen’s administration.
