The boardwalk at Bandaara Kilhi in Fuvahmulah City was significantly damaged on Thursday due to strong winds amidst adverse weather conditions.
A video shared on Facebook by an individual, Moosa Mohamed, shows extensive destruction along the boardwalk. He draws urgent attention to the situation, directing the matter to the city’s Mayor.
In response to inquiries from Sun, the Fuvahmulah City Council confirmed that the damage occurred during severe weather conditions and strong winds experienced overnight.
The video shared by Moosa Mohamed shows that sections of the boardwalk’s railings have been heavily damaged, while part of the sheltered seating area at the end of the pier has collapsed into the surrounding wetlands.
Councilor Aminath Inaya confirmed that repair work has not yet begun. Citing serious damage has been caused by the adverse weather conditions, she said the council has yet to deliberate on a formal restoration plan for the site.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a White Alert across a large area of the country, forecasting strong winds. The advisory predicts average wind speeds of 19 to 24 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph.
Notably, earlier this year, in February, the boardwalk’s railings were vandalized.
A video released by the council at the time showed sections of the railings along the walkway being dismantled and discarded into the wetlands. The council voiced serious concern regarding the recurring vandalism at Bandaara Kilhi and appealed to visitors to refrain from damaging the site.
Bandaara Kilhi is one of the most significant landmarks for both residents and tourists visiting Fuvahmulah.
