Man remanded for 15 days for carjacking, causing accidents while under influence

A 35-year-old man has been remanded in custody for causing a series of dangerous road accidents in Fuvahmulah City with a car that was hijacked after assaulting and threatening the vehicle owner.

The Maldives Police Service reported that at approximately 18:22pm, a car travelling near the 'Moodige' area of Fuvahmulah collided with a motorcycle. The driver failed to stop and subsequently crashed into another vehicle and a palm tree further along the road.

The suspect, identified as Ahmed Aunullah, Andhaz, Miskiymathu, Fuvahmulah, who was arrested in connection with the incident, has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may have been driving under the influence. Authorities stated that he allegedly took the vehicle by force after assaulting its owner and threatening to destroy the car.

The accident left a woman riding the motorcycle and an eight-year-old female passenger injured. Both were treated at Fuvahmulah Hospital, where medical officials confirmed that neither sustained life-threatening injuries. The two cars and motorcycle involved in the incident also sustained extensive damage. Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

In a separate incident, a serious road accident occurred last night in Hulhumalé Phase II near the Vinares-7 flat, leaving a nine-year-old child in critical condition and on ventilator support.

According to the Police, CCTV footage shows that the accident occurred when a motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu struck a pedestrian who was attempting to enter a car near Vinares-7.

The 18-year-old female motorcycle driver and a nine-year-old female passenger were both injured and transported to the hospital.
