Lawyer Ali Hussain has begun work on submitting a petition to the Supreme Court to declare that several parliamentarians have lost their seats, but the media regulatory body, the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, has remained silent on the matter.
Ali Hussain posted on X that around six MPs have lost their seats in parliament and that their cases are being prepared to be filed with the Supreme Court.

He said the members were independently elected to parliament and later signed up for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
On April 29, the Supreme Court ruled that there is no basis to invalidate the constitutional amendment that allows MPs to lose their seats if they change or leave their party.
Explaining further details to Sun, Ali Hussain said he believes the members will lose their seats even if they remain in the PNC, as they were elected as independent candidates.
He added that work has now begun to identify and research the members concerned.
While Ali made the statement, eight independently elected MPs have signed up for the PNC. They are:
Dr. Anaara Naeem, Huraa Constituency
Yaseen Abdullah, Naifaru Constituency
Azim Abdul Aziz, Villingili Constituency
Hassan Zareer, Mathiveri Constituency
Ahmed Zameer, Mahchangolhi Central Constituency
Mohamed Rasheed, Nolhivaram Constituency
Shamin Habeeb, Kurendhoo Constituency
