Ashiyath Alaika Adhnan, who unsuccessfully ran for the presidency of the Women’s Development Committee of Male’ on behalf of ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), has been appointed as a state minister at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
Sun has learnt that Alaika has been appointed to the role. However, the government has yet to provide an official confirmation.
Alaika had lost the tightly contested race on April 4 to Aisthath Reesha, the candidate from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Following her defeat, Alaika wrote on X that her decision to contest the elections was never merely about attaining a position.
She said that it wasn’t the end of her political career, but rather a quiet turning point.
“The journey will continue, more with renewed strength, deeper conviction, and an enduring commitment to serve with integrity, purpose, and dedication,” she wrote.
Alaika’s appointment to a senior position comes amid major changes within President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration in the wake of the ruling party’s heavy defeat in the local council and WDC elections held on April 4 – seen as a midterm test for the administration.
The changes have seen President Muizzu downsize and reappoint his cabinet. It has also seen changes to the upper management of state-owned enterprises, and orders to cut employees by 33 percent and implement other cost-cutting measures.
He has stated that appointments would be based strictly on merit.
