President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to launch a modern housing project for soldiers at the Bandeyri Koshi area of Male’ City before the end of this year.
The announcement was made on Saturday night at the official ceremony held at Kalhuthuh'kalaa Koshi to mark the 134th anniversary of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
In his address, President Muizzu blamed previous administrations for failing to bring any development to Bandeyri Koshi, an area with homes for active soldiers and their families.
He said that the area was severely rundown, and needs modernization.
President Muizzu hopes to be able to begin construction work on the project before the end of this year.
“Therefore, a modern housing project will be run in the entire Bandeyri Koshi area, and we hope to initiate the stage for practical works this year,” he said.
He said that the project would start in early 2027 by the latest.
President Muizzu also announced plans to increase the quota for soldiers in public housing schemes.
He said that housing is a fundamental right of every Maldivian citizen, including soldiers.
The Maldivian military, now known as the MNDF, was officially established on April 21, 1892.
