Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) deployed soldiers on Monday, after heavy rain flooded the streets of Male’ City.

The current spell of bad weather has been attributed to the monsoon transitional period, as the Northeast or Iruvai Monsoon transitions into Southwest or Hulhangu Monsoon.

The capital Male’ experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday, resulting in flooding.

The MNDF states that soldiers from the Fire and Rescue Services have been deployed to dewater flooded streets.

Soldiers are using pumps to dewater the streets in the worst-hit areas such as the area surrounding Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the Maafannu Ferry Terminal, the Salman Mosque, and the Swimming Track.

The flooding comes with a yellow alert for moderate thunderstorms in place for the area from Lh. Atoll to V. Atoll until at least 01:00 pm.

The Maldives Meteorological Service expects fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms with gusts of 40 miles per hour to persists over the next 24 hours, with central and southern regions expected to be particularly hard-hit.

Seas are expected to be moderate becoming rough during showers.
