Bank of Maldives (BML) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore Management University (SMU) to enhance their strategic collaboration in leadership development, professional education, and capacity building.

The agreement formalizes and broadens the existing partnership between BML Academy—the Bank’s dedicated institute for academic and professional development—and SMU Academy, the university’s professional training arm.

Under the terms of the agreement, SMU will support the design and delivery of customised learning programmes for BML employees, while also facilitating structured knowledge transfer to strengthen internal expertise. This initiative is expected to enhance BML Academy’s capacity to scale high-quality development opportunities and establish clear pathways for continuous professional growth.

Commenting on the partnership, BML’s CEO, Managing Director Mohamed Shareef stated that the collaboration underscores the Bank’s ongoing commitment to cultivating a strong leadership pipeline and enhancing professional capabilities across the organization.

“As the Maldives’ largest financial institution, we play an important role in shaping the economy. Through BML Academy, we are building structured, internationally aligned learning pathways that empower the future leaders of our economy,” he added.

Key initiatives undertaken in collaboration with SMU over the past year include the successful completion of leadership program by 40 BML employees. Of these, 20 senior staff obtained the Executive Certificate in Leadership and People Management directly from SMU, while an additional 20 employees were awarded the Certificate in Leadership and People Management through BML Academy following completion of an SMU-led program. Further cohorts are currently in progress as the partnership continues to evolve.

Bank of Maldives reiterated its commitment to investing in employee development and strengthening organizational capabilities, in support of its broader transformation strategy and efforts to deliver enhanced banking services. Through BML Academy, the Bank continues to provide structured professional development programs for its workforce.
