Following the abolition of the Ministry of Local Government, the Finance Minister was designated as the Chairman of the Authority to Regulate Councils, placing the portfolio under his oversight.

The post of LGA CEO has changed twice during the current administration. Mariyam Zulfa was the first to take the role, followed by former Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Nimal.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that working closely with councils is a priority for him. The President has visited all inhabited islands and met with island councils during his travels.
