Jameel to be appointed chief judge of High Court

Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) decided on Monday to appoint Abdulla Jameel Moosa as the chief judge of the High Court.

The post of chief judge of the High Court became vacant after Hussain Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court.

Sitting High Court judges Jameel, Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla, and former High Court judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim had applied for the vacancy.

Sun has learnt that the JSC decided on Monday to appoint Jameel, who has been serving as acting chief judge of the court, to the role. However, it has yet to publicly announce the decision.

Jameel has a Bachelor of Sharia and Law (with Honors) from Kulliyyathul Dhirasathul Islamiyya.

His career as a judge spans 15 years. He began as a magistrate at the L. Dhanbidhoo Court in 2009, before soon transferring to the Civil Court, where he served as a judge from 2009 to 2019.

He then left his career as a judge to work as an attorney, before getting appointed to the High Court in 2025.

He had been serving as the court’s chief judge since November 19, 2025.
