Former President Mohamed Nasheed has returned to the Maldives following the conclusion of his tenure as Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), a position that required him to reside abroad for an extended period.
Nasheed initially announced in December 2023 that he would step back from active politics to take up leadership of the CVF. Although he made occasional visits to the Maldives during his tenure to participate in select campaigns, he has now rejoined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and is once again actively engaged in the country’s political affairs.
According to the official CVF website, Nasheed’s term as Secretary General has come to an end. Sources have confirmed to Sun that he arrived in the Maldives earlier today.

Notably, his return comes after the MDP National Council has decided to allocate him a dedicated seat within the council. This decision comes after recent internal discussions and efforts aimed at reconciling internal conflicts within the party.
On Thursday, President Nasheed posted a cryptic message on his unofficial X account, stating, "Everyone, prepare to return to the nest." While its exact meaning remains unclear, it is widely interpreted as a signal of his full return to domestic politics.
The Maldives is a founding member of the CVF and hosted the forum’s inaugural meeting in 2009. The CVF’s primary objective is to raise global awareness of the impacts of climate change and advocate for environmentally sustainable policies, including a transition for member states toward 100 percent renewable energy.
