The Civil Service Commission (CSC) stated on Sunday that a new Director General will be appointed to the Health Protection Agency (HPA) within the course of this month.

The position of Director General of Public Health became vacant following the retirement of Maimoona Aboobakuru on the first day of this year. In order to fill the vacancy, the CSC opened applications for the post in February.

CSC's Vice President Mohamed Nasih told Sun on Sunday that the recruitment process is now nearing completion.

“The recruitment process for the post of Director General of Public Health has been completed, and an appointment will be made this month,” Nasih said.

Maimoona announced her retirement on January 7, citing personal reasons and noting that her departure was made in accordance with established procedures.

Appointed to the position on November 17, 2016, she served the health sector for over 35 years. Her tenure was particularly distinguished by her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which she played a central role in the national response.

Throughout the pandemic, she was responsible for overseeing key policy decisions and implementing wide-ranging public health measures aimed at safeguarding public safety. She also played a critical role in ensuring the timely dissemination of accurate information to the public during that period.
