The land reclamation project in Th. Veymandoo has been completed in under one month, resulting in the addition of 27 hectares of land to the island.

The project was undertaken by the state-owned Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), with reclamation operations carried out using the dredger 'Filippo Brunelleschi'.

According to MACL, work on the project commenced on March 12 and was successfully completed on April 4.

In a post on X, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that the Veymandoo land reclamation project was completed within a span of 23 days.

The 'Filippo Brunelleschi', a trailing suction hopper dredger designed in Spain in 2003, is owned by the Belgian Jan De Nul Group. In 2023, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) deployed the same vessel to reclaim eight hectares of land in ADh. Bodufolhudhoo.

The proposed causeway linking Veymandoo and Kinbidhoo was a presidential pledge of former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. However, by the conclusion of his five-year term, the project had neither commenced nor demonstrated notable progress.

During visits to Thaa Atoll in 2023 and 2024, President Dr. Muizzu reiterated his commitment to implementing the Veymandoo-Kinbidhoo causeway project. Nonetheless, physical work on the initiative has yet to begin.
