A new fish processing facility has opened in Addu City, expanding opportunities for fishermen in the south.
The facility was inaugurated by State Minister of Fisheries Aminath Hussain Shareef. The ceremony was attended by MIFCO CEO and Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Farhath Shaheer, along with senior officials from MIFCO and the Addu Fisheries Complex.
The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) said the facility was established to purchase and process fish from the southern region. The company said the new centre will allow Addu fishermen to safely pack their catch, access reliable processing services, and increase their earnings.

MIFCO said the facility will use blast freezing technology for processing. Canned fish produced in Addu will be available at the MIFCO Hull store starting Tuesday, and distributors are being arranged to make the products available across Addu.
The facility was built by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC).
MIFCO is also carrying out additional projects in the region, including the construction of a cold storage and blast freezing centre in Hirilandhoo, and the expansion of its fish purchase and cold storage operations in Thinadhoo.
