Construction of 50 additional housing units has begun in Thinadhoo City, expanding the government’s ongoing housing programme on the island.

The Housing Ministry said the project was inaugurated on Monday by Housing Minister Dr Abdullah Muthalib. The units will be developed by Swift Engineering Pvt Ltd under a contractor‑financing model.

According to the ministry, the project consists of 50 three‑bedroom housing units and is scheduled to be completed within 450 days, roughly one year and three months.

Thinadhoo already has 200 housing units under construction, a project launched in 2022 by the previous administration. Applications for those units were opened last year, and the ministry said 1,022 people have applied. Evaluation of the applications is ongoing, after which the list of recipients will be publicly announced.

The ministry noted that the initial announcement for applications, issued by the council, was cancelled because it had not been authorised. A revised application window was later opened in September.

In addition to the new housing project, the third phase of Thinadhoo’s road modernisation programme also commenced on Monday. The work, carried out by the Road Development Corporation (RDC), will see 50 roads, totalling 19.3 kilometres, paved and fitted with drainage systems.
