Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has urged the government to clarify its plan for ensuring water security in the capital, noting that water production in Male’ and many islands relies entirely on diesel.
Azim made the remarks on Monday amid growing public concern over the impact of the global oil crisis on the Maldives. In a post on X, he said the diesel stock available in Male’ is only sufficient for a maximum of one day, raising questions about how the government intends to manage a potential shortage.
He said the government must establish a clear order of priority for the use of the city’s diesel reserves and inform the public of its contingency plan should supplies run out.

The global oil shortage has already led to significant fluctuations in fuel prices in the Maldives, prompting calls for stronger and more strategic government action.
The crisis has been intensified by the U.S.–Israeli war against Iran, which threatens to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage through which around 20 percent of the world’s oil supply is transported. The strait, only 21 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point, is a critical route for Middle Eastern oil bound for Asian markets.
