The bodies of two out of the five Bangladeshis who died in the fire which broke out at an accommodation block for expatriates in ADh. Dhigurah is set to be flown home.
Bangladesh’s ‘The Business Standard’ reported that the bodies of Safeegul Islam and MD Sadar Ali, two out of the five Bangladeshis who died in the Dhigurah blaze, will be flown to Bangladesh sometime today.
The remaining three victims who died have been identified as Tajuddin Islam, MD Robin Molla and MD Nabeesarkaar.
Another two Bangladeshis severely injured in the fire are currently being treated on ventilator support at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). They remain in critical condition.
The fire at the accommodation block for expatriates in Dhigurah was reported to the authorities at 01:57am Friday, and was put out about a half-an-hour later, at 02:30am.
It was reportedly caused by a gas leak in the kitchen. Some media outlets reported that the only entrance to the accommodation block is a door adjacent to the kitchen where the fire broke out.
According to the Police, the people inside were rescued by breaking in through the wall in the back of the building.
The incident is under investigation by a special investigative team from the Major Crime Investigations Department of the police.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is also conducting an inquiry to determine whether systemic lapses in safety or human rights violations played a role in the tragedy.
