Collection of zakat in food staples begins

Maldives Zakat House has begun accepting Zakat al-Fitr in food grains.

The collection of zakat in food grains began in the greater Male’ area on Saturday and will continue until Wednesday.

According to the Zakat House, grains will be accepted as zakat in the Male’ area from Center for Higher Education (CHSE) building in Male’ City.

  • March 14-15: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
  • March 16-18: 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and 01:00 pm to 03:00 pm

Zakat al-Fitr must be paid at a rate of 2.4 kilograms of food grain per person, based on the type of staple grain commonly consumed in daily meals, including:

  • Regular rice
  • Thailand rice
  • Basmati rice
  • Red rice
  • Wheat flour
  • Atta flour

Zakat is also being accepted via cash and card payments, as well as through online platforms.

The seven online platforms that zakat can be paid via are:

  • Dhiraagu Mobile App and Dhiraagu Pay website
  • Ooredoo m-Faisaa Mobile App
  • Maldives Islamic Bank Mobile App
  • Bank of Maldives Mobile App
  • FahiPay Mobile App
  • Avas Mobile App
  • Bandeyri Pay website

The Zakat House collected MVR 5.48 million as zakat within the first 15 days of Ramadan – marking the highest collection during that period over the last three years.
