MDP launches Male' City manifesto with plans to redevelop flats, improve transport and markets

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) launched its Male' City manifesto on Sunday evening, unveiling a set of proposals aimed at addressing long‑standing issues in the capital ahead of next month’s local council elections.

The manifesto, titled “Trustworthy Service: The Pulse of Male' City,” outlines both immediate and long‑term measures to improve living conditions in the capital.

According to the party, the manifesto is built on three pillars: empowering the people, making daily life easier, and enabling easier business. Each pillar is further divided into sector‑specific action areas.

One of the key pledges is to expedite the handover of land plots in the Greater Male' region.

The manifesto also proposes the demolition and redevelopment of the Sinamale' flats, along with measures to widen and improve narrow streets in the city.

To address parking and waste‑management challenges, the MDP plans to introduce multi‑purpose parking structures and backyard parking systems. The party also pledges to establish modern bus stops and expand the city’s transport fleet to strengthen public transport services.

The manifesto further includes transferring the operation of the cat facility Olhuhiyaa to the Male' City Council.

Other proposals include redeveloping the fish market and local market, introducing real‑time online price updates, and expanding local tourism by enhancing the local market area to better showcase Maldivian products.
