Islamic Ministry has announced plans to construct two spacious, state-of-the-art mosques on the current sites of Bandara Mosque and Zikra Mosque in Malé.
In a message to the media, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed stated that a generous donor has pledged support to build a state-of-the-art mosque at the location of Bandara Mosque. Construction is scheduled to begin after the month of Ramadan. Minister Shaheem added that once the project is completed, all major mosques in Malé would have undergone modernization.
The Minister also confirmed that a spacious, state-of-the-art mosque will be built on the site of Zikra Mosque on Majeedhee Magu, with funding secured through a private donation. He further noted that he hopes to lay the foundation stone for the new Zikra Mosque on the 27th night of Ramadan.
During the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, SJ Construction was contracted to develop a 10-storey building on the Zikra Mosque site, though the project was later halted.
Later, in 2024, under the current administration, the Ministry again contracted SJ Construction to construct a mosque at the site, but the project remains incomplete.
Bandara Mosque, located in the northern area of Malé, has undergone renovations during the administrations of former presidents Ibrahim Nasir and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The mosque is also historically significant, as Bohra merchants originally built it.
