Ali Samin, 31, passed away on April 14 in a hospital in India.
The family of former spouses who were killed in a house fire in AA. Rasdhoo has filed letters with multiple state authorities, seeking closure as the investigation into the tragedy drags on for close to a year.
The fire took place in a home in Rasdhoo on the night of March 24, 2025. Ali Samin and Aishath Rifqa, former spouses both aged 31 years, sustained serious burn injuries and did not survive. Meanwhile, their five-year-old child was unharmed in the incident.
Rifqa died at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male' on March 31, 2025, while Samin died in a hospital in India on April 14, 2025.
Samin’s family sent a letter on December 25 to then-Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen urging the police to take statements from witnesses and persons of interest in the case, and also asking for an explanation for the delay in the investigation.
Naveen had later retired on April 18.
A member of Samin’s family told Sun on Monday that they have yet to receive a response to the letter, despite making numerous attempts to get one.
The family sent more letters last week, to the Prosecutor General’s Office, to Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan, the President’s Office, and the Parliament.
In the letters, which Sun has received copies of, the family expressed concern that the investigation is dragging on for close to a year. The family said that the police failed to take statements from key persons of interest, and to extract data from phones and other electronic devices.
The family believes that there’s crucial evidence linked to the case in Samin’s phone.
They urged the authorities to conduct a through investigation into the fire, and provide them with answers as soon as possible.
