A 26‑year‑old man from G.Dh. Gadhdhoo has been arrested for eating during the daytime in Ramadan, marking the fourth such arrest this month. He has been remanded in custody for 15 days.
Two men were arrested on the first day of Ramadan for eating during daylight hours. One was remanded for 15 days and the other for 10 days. On the second day, another Maldivian man was arrested on the same charge.
Under the Penal Code, it is an offence for a person who is obliged to fast to eat, drink or smoke in a public place before sunset during Ramadan without a legitimate excuse. The act is defined under Article 611(a)(2) and classified as a third‑degree offence under Article 611(b).
The basic punishment for a third‑degree felony is one month and six days in jail, though the sentence may vary depending on the circumstances. Judges also have the discretion to impose a fine or community service instead of imprisonment.
Authorities note that such acts may also fall under the Protection of Religious Unity Act, as they can be considered acts that undermine or defame Islam.
